my, how things change.

As I was waiting in the checkout line at Meijer today, I was looking at my groceries and it dawned on me just how much my eating habits have changed over the past couple years. The past six months, even.

I had a ton of produce of all sorts, ranging from strawberries to avocado to sweet potatoes. The most processed things I had were a couple boxes of Morningstar products, bread, and tortilla chips. It wasn’t long ago that my cart would have had some chicken, perhaps some ground beef, ice cream, Kraft macaroni and cheese, a case or two of Diet Coke, a lot of Lean Cuisine and Weight Watchers frozen meals, and some 100 calorie snacks of whatever sounded good.

A world different now.

I feel so much better about the kinds of things I am buying today. I know that what I am putting in my body is remarkably better for me. The foods I bought today give me a variety of vitamins, nutrients, and so on. They fuel my body so much better than the processed things I used to (and, let’s be honest, occasionally still do) eat.

I have started a new challenge for myself: each week, I will buy something from the produce section I have never had before. I so frequently eat the same kinds of fruits and vegetables, but I know there are so many awesome things out there I overlook. This week: sweet potatoes.

I made a last minute decision to get my butt out of bed this morning and go to church. It’s been a few weeks since I’ve gone, so it was good to get back. I grabbed a quarter of a honey oat bagel on my way into the service (and another on the way out).

Lunch was a peanut butter and honey sandwich on some flaxseed bread once I got home.

Now it’s time for the World Cup finals! Yeah!!! I’m rooting for the Netherlands. My heritage is primarily Dutch, so I’ve got to support my people!

Good for you! It feels great to buy fresh, unprocessed food that your body can use for fuel…especially when it tastes so good! I had a post on change a couple days ago…change is good! 🙂

I love the new layout! Easy to look at, yet elegant in the same sense. That’s great that you have made such a change in your shopping. I love the grocery store, always trying new things and rarely browsing the middle aisles of the store. I do enjoy frozen meals for a quick dinner – they keep my portion issue under control!
