july 13 fitblog.

07.14.10

I have been participating in the fitblog “chats” on Twitter for a few weeks now and thought I would start putting my answers on here…140 characters only gives so much of an opportunity to explain!

Question 1: There are so many routes to fitness – what’s yours?
I did Weight Watchers off and on for about two years. I’ve started running and did a 25K in May; currently, I am gearing up to start training for a half marathon. I mix up my fitness with things like yoga, Zumba, strength training, etc. Foodwise, I have started to focus on cutting out processed foods and shopping on the outer edges of the grocery store. I am a vegetarian, flirting with the idea of going vegan, but that’s a work in progress.

Question 1.1: Do you find your best workouts come when you’re with others or do you prefer working out on your own?

I definitely do better on my own. I like to just get in my own little zone and do my thing. When I was training for the 25K, I would do my long runs with a friend who was also in training.

Question 2: A lot has been said about eating pre- and post-workout. Do you have a routine you follow re: this? If so, what is it?
I definitely don’t, although I know I probably should. If I know I’m going to push myself a futher/harder than normal, I’ll take a Gu, but that’s about it. I think I would have better workouts if I were more conscious about what I was eating, especially beforehand.

Question 3: Do your friends or family or coworkers read your blog regularly? Do you care if they do? Or is it “personal”?
Although most of them know about it, I don’t think any read it regularly. I really don’t care if they do; if I did, I wouldn’t give them the link! More than anything, I think they just think it’s weird that I photograph my food.

Question 3.1: Do you care if ANYONE reads? Do you track readers, or just take who comes? Does a “following” matter to you?
It is nice to know see when I get hits, it’s encouraging. I think that knowing people read it makes me feel more accountable to what I am doing and how I am living.

Question 3.2: Do you do anything special to encourage comments or repeat readers? Or just “let it lie”?
Occasionally, I’ll throw a question or two in with what I’m writing, but more often than not, I don’t. The most I really do is post on Twitter since there are a few bloggers that follow me there and I’m also a part of the Healthy Living Summit list. Regardless of the number of comments/faithful readers/hits, more than anything, I really started the site for me.

Question 4: Would your fitness journey be any different if you COULDN’T blog? How?
Since I’ve only had my site for about two months, I can already sense there’s a difference in my journey. Before I started, I didn’t feel too bad if I would have a few days in a row where I ate not so great or a week where I didn’t get any “real” exercise in. I think that blogging has made me more aware of my actions and helped me to put more thought and effort into it. I think the healthy living blog community is such a great support system that when there are those times, there are people there to encourage, to motivate, to give advice, and so on. That support system and accountability is so awesome.

Question 5: What’s one fitness or blog-related thing you want to accomplish before the summer is over?
Well, this is technically after summer is over, but I am running a half-marathon on October 17, so I’d love to finish in under 2.5 hours. I guess, by extension, my summer goal would just be to work on a) getting my mileage back up to where it was during my 25K training, and b) increase my speed.

I am considering a 5K at the end of September, so I’d love to finish that in under 30 minutes.

This is the first time I’ve done a follow up post, and I think I’m going to keep doing it. It’s so hard to get all my thoughts to fit in 140 characters. Plus, it’s nice to put a bit more thought into it!
