a bad name for RDs everywhere.

I have a bad habit. I bring foods to work, leave them in the office fridge, and things just accumulate. Before long, there’s half a drawer with things labeled “Mindy” and whatever date I brought it in, just so that nobody takes it for themselves or throws it away.

Today’s lunch was an effort to eat up some of my food stash. Hence, a quite random combination: pom Chiobani along with some carrots and hummus.

Clearly a natural combination.

I had a cupcake.  Red velvet with cream cheese frosting?  My favorite.

And with that, my day was pretty much complete.

After work, I went with a few of my coworkers to hear a presentation from a Registered Dietitian. I was stoked when the opportunity came up. I write a healthy living blog, this was right up my alley.

I very quickly questioned her credibility as an RD. Very quickly. Shall we review some of the “helpful” hints that were shared over the course of an hour?

  • On the shopping list she handed out, the first item listed in the beverages column:  diet beverages/soda.
  • On the list of fiber sources:  Fiber One bars, cereals, and pastries.  Oh, and Sugar Smacks cereal.  I’ll admit, there were a large number of legit sources, but Fiber One?  Seriously?
  • Need a good snack to keep in your car for when you’re on the road?  Throw an apple in your cup holder or glove box because it won’t go bad.

There were many more things I questioned, but you get the idea.  I generally try to believe that people with a very specific job, such as an RD, know what they’re talking about.  But, really?  Diet soda.  On a shopping list.

The thing that really bothered me is that this is the stuff that she is very clearly sharing with people all day long.  Fiber One is not nutrition!  How about some grains like quinoa (rather than the macaroni which also made it on the list).

Okay, rant over.  I wish I had spoken up and questioned some of the things she was saying.  I didn’t.  Hindsight is always 20/20, right?

Afterwards, I went and grabbed dinner at On the Border with one of my co-workers who went to hear the presentation.

As always, you have to start with chips and salsa.

My main dish was the avocado and red chile pesto enchiladas.  I had it with the black beans and the cilantro lime rice.  (Vegetarian friends, beware that this is what you need to get for their beans and rice options.  The refried beans and Spanish rice are not veg-friendly!)

As soon as I got in the car to start driving, I realized I forgot to take a picture.  Ah well, there’s always the leftovers since I only ate half the meal.  But, let’s be real.  It never looks as pretty once it’s half-eaten and thrown in a to go container.

What’s the worst piece of good nutrition advice you’ve heard?
