To my adorable niece, Emma:

I’m really glad I got to spend time with you this weekend.  I had lots of fun cuddling on the couch, watching a movie, playing, and just hanging out.  I’m sorry you have strep throat, I know that’s no fun.  But, I really, really, really hope you didn’t pass it on to me.

Love,
Aunt Mindy

I was in bed before 9:30 last night, asleep by a little before 10:00 and then proceeded to sleep for over 9 hours.  If you know me at all, going to sleep that early is not a normal occurrence.  On top of it, I’m feeling like I could have slept another 3 or 4 hours, easily.  I’m hoping that’s not a bad sign for my health!  Keep me healthy, immune system, do your magic!

breakfast.

I had yet another bagel and cream cheese this morning.  It’s like the cream cheese that will never end; I swear it looks like I haven’t made a dent in it!

In other news, today is one of those days that I wish I had stayed in the College of Education.  How’s that for something you didn’t know about me?  That’s right, I wanted to be a teacher for the vast majority of my life.  Up until the end of my junior year of college, that’s what I was gunning for.  Middle school social studies, to be exact.  When I took my teaching methods class (learning to write lesson plans, assignments, tests/quizzes, etc.), that’s when I realized I’d be miserable.  After a summer of  frantically finding a new major soul searching, I switched to advertising and public relations, which I loved.  I was so much happier!

Anyways, back to the I wish I had stuck to the teacher route.  There are over 220 closings or 2 hour delays around West Michigan (including a closing for the school system I grew up in, where a snow day was a rare and joyous occasion when I was there!).  I would have taken a snow day!  Oh, the joys of Michigan winters!  But alas, I fared the roads (which aren’t that terrible in the city this morning) and I’m ready to take on another day at the office!

Have you had a major career (or anticipated career) change?

Isn’t being an aunt the greatest!? Not getting sick, but the cuddling part. 🙂

Your niece is adorable, I am glad you had a great time with her. I am undergoing a big career change right now. Goodbye Geology, hello culinary world! I feel the same way about teaching. There is so much crap that goes on in the system these days that teachers are not just teachers anymore. I would, however, love to one day teach in a culinary arts school.

    I hope you don’t get sick…

And to answer your question, I had a HUGE career change recently. I went to college thinking I would become a biochemist, but I changed my mind after being in a basement lab four four hours a night making solutions and calculating complicated equations. I studied print journalism and history and became a daily newspaper reporter, first focusing on education and human-interest stories and then focusing on general news and human-interest stories for almost an entire county! But my fiance finally found his dream job — broadcasting for a sports team — and I moved to another state with him and took the first job I was qualified for and didn’t think I’d hate… So here I am!

Do I regret it? Not really. Sometimes, but I know everything happens for a reason. Do I miss my old life? Yes, immensely. But again, everything will shake out the way it’s supposed to right?

I’m going to get back to my snow-day chores of laundry, cooking and blogging. Have a good day, sweetie!
